top 5 reasons you want to be a featured planner March 04, 2010 posted in Featured Planners

Featured Planners Collage

1.  You will be among some of the most stylish, beautiful, strong and smart women that I know.  The above collage showcases just a few of the planners we have featured.  I am so grateful for the opportunity to get to know them through working on their feature.  You can read their features by clicking here:  Featured Planners.

2.  It’s easy.  You fill out an interview questionnaire, choose a few photos to submit, make sure you meet the guidelines and e-mail me the info.  I plug you into the next available spot on the editorial calendar, create your style profile, post it and tweet it.  Click here for the guidelines and interview questions:  The Stylish Planner Featured Planner Guidelines.  It’s a great way to put your name out there at no cost to you.

2.  You WILL be featured – as long as you meet the guidelines.  I am not sitting here in my office looking at planners photos deciding who is feature-worthy and who isn’t.  I’m dedicated to featuring all planners, regardless of your style.  Our differences are what make us interesting.  You are unique and you have ideas to share.  Other planners want to hear from you.

3.  Planners really want to hear from you – the featured planner of the week post is the most read post of the week.  In February, The Stylish Planner received almost 1500 unique visitors, 600 of those visitors were on Thursdays, when I post the featured planner of the week.

4.  Being featured and reading other planners features makes the wedding/event planning world very small.  If you are planning on attending any continuing education seminars or workshops this year, you will have an opportunity to meet some of these lovely ladies.  Whether you are attending Making Things Happen 2010 Intensive, Academy for Planners & Designers, The Simple Plan, Eventology 2010, or the Get Real Sales Training Workshop, you can put a face with a name and get to know ladies in advance.  It makes it much easier to strike up a conversation and note shared interests, trust me.

5.  If only a few people retweet your feature, you are suddenly in front of a whole new group of people you otherwise would probably not be able to interact with.  Jen Wooster-McBride’s feature was spotted and retweeted “late breaking news style” by a new local area blog called Fashionably Columbus.  This created local interest in Jen and her company outside of the wedding/event industry.  Have the photographer that did your photos for your feature retweet the link and you are both getting recognition as well as new followers.

Are there any questions for planners that you’d like me to include in the questionnaire?  Any way I can make the submission process easier?  Let me know!

I look forward to receiving your submissions.  Please feel free to contact me if you should have any questions at all.  I can be reached at info@thestylishplanner.com.

Ivy Robinson – Charlotte, North Carolina

Note from Jeannine:  I first heard of Ivy Robinson when I saw her on an episode of Whose Wedding Is It Anyway? on the Style Network.  I was immediately drawn to her sense of humor and found myself wishing for more episodes with Ivy!  She has wonderful energy and a great sense of personal style that you can see carried over into her event designs.  Ivy’s style is a great example of being true to yourself.  I hope you enjoy getting to know more about Ivy as much as I have!

How would you describe your personal style: I personally like bold colors and strong contrasts and patterns, I always look for one element that is different & interesting.  I would totally rock a dress from Target and throw some designer shoes & purse on with it.

What is your "go-to" meeting attire?  Typically I would wear a fun dress or skirt but it also depends on where the meeting is held.  If I’m going to a corporate head quarters then I probably wouldn’t wear my cowboy boots…but then again on second thought…I wouldn’t put it past me.

What is you "go-to" evening industry event attire?  My mood for the day dictates what I wear {*smile*}.  or evening industry event affairs you would normally see me in a fun jacket, skirt or dress.

What is your attire for wedding day set-up?  VERY Comfortable yet still professional.

What is your attire for actual wedding?  Being on my feet for 15-18 hours on a wedding day requires a comfortable dress & shoes that I can move around quickly in. Wedding days aren’t fashion shows for me so I’ll pass on the 4 inch stilettos.

What style and brand of shoes do you wear on wedding/event days?  Whatever matches…there is no particular brand that I wear on wedding days. But typically they are flats or with small heels.

What are your favorite jeans and why?  Hudson & Dylan George jeans are my favorite. They aren’t as friendly on the bank account but they are so comfortable and wear well!

What are a few of your favorite cosmetic products?  My make up is a hodgepodge of things! You’ll find Lancôme Definicils Mascara, Estee Lauder foundation, MAC Cosmetics Mineral Powder & blush, Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick, and random lip glosses from the drug store.

What products are in your current skincare regimen?  Obagi & Burts Bees

Who is your favorite celebrity style icon and why?  I love the humbleness & confidence of Reece Witherspoon and Kate Hudson and the sophistication that Jackie Kennedy displayed in her style.

Please share with us (in 50 words or less) your favorite beauty or style tip:  I never leave the house without mascara & lip gloss!  Those are a must have and if I am running out the door it only takes 1 minute to apply Voila!.  My top tip is to have confidence from within and your beauty will naturally follow.

How would you describe your personal style?

Colorful and girlie with a touch of preppy thrown in. I like to mix casual and dressier pieces, modern with vintage to create a unique style.

What is your “go-to” meeting attire?

I have a selection of casual day dresses that I rely on for the first meeting with a client. For other meetings dark jeans with a fun blazer and heels.

What is your “go-to” evening industry event attire? (i.e., associational meeting, vendor or venue open house, etc.)

Columbus is a pretty casual town but I enjoy dressing up. Right now my go to outfit is a high waist black pencil skirt with a bright silk top and cardigan. Cute shoes are always a must.

What is your attire for wedding/event day set-up?

In warm weather, I prefer a knit skirt and top. In colder weather dark jeans with a top I can move in.

What is your attire for actual wedding/event?

A short sleeve black dress with a flair skirt. The dress has pockets which is an absolute must have. I pair it with a cute belt and simple vintage earrings. A suit doesn’t feel festive enough but I don’t want to look like a guest either. So this is a good compromise.

What style and brand of shoes do you wear on wedding/event days?

For set up I have lime green Born clogs, they are too comfy. For the event I wear either round toe pumps or bright colored open toe heels.

What are your favorite jeans and why?

I like Joe’s Jeans in the Honey cut, a nice boot cut that fits over my bum and still has a small enough waist. For skinny jeans I like Paige Premium Denim. They take off 10 pounds- I swear!

What are a few of your favorite cosmetic products?

I am actually terrible at doing my make-up. I just have never quite gotten the hang of it. For daily wear I like Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer with SPF and Cover Girl Outlast Lip Stain with Lip Trip Chapstick over the top. For events, Dior Skin Air flash Spray Foundation gives a great finish. I am on the lookout for a great blush that doesn’t rub off. Any suggestions?

What products are in your current skincare regimen?

Aveeno Foaming Cleanser to keep breakouts down. I swear by Peter Thomas Roth 10% Glycolic Moisturizer. Overnight it takes away all the dead skin that builds up over the cold Ohio winters.

Who is your favorite celebrity style icon and why?

I would have to say Rachel Bilson. I love the way she mixes pieces and does layering. She is petite like me so I can identify with the shapes she chooses.

Please share with us (in 50 words or less) your favorite beauty or style tip:

Everyone knows you need a great tailor but you should also have a cobbler on speed dial. A good cobbler can make your shoes more comfortable while extending their life. I have had my favorite boots resoled 3 times over the last 10 years! It’s eco conscious and wallet friendly.

featured givers of the week: planners giving back January 21, 2010 posted in Featured Planners

I suppose I am feeling reflective due to the recent earthquakes in Haiti. Or maybe it is because of the media coverage honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this week.  At any rate, when people step up to create change they have my attention.  Dr. King had many followers, but he alone became the voice of change for our country during a dark time in our history.  He was the one who stepped up and had the courage to say what others were thinking and feeling.  His words encouraged action.

On Monday, the post on The Stylish Planner was on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the recognition of this day as a day of service in our communities.  In this post, I challenged wedding and event planners to choose and add a philanthropy to your business by the end of January.  It’s not just good business, it is the right thing to do.

Instead of posting a featured planner of the week today, I thought I would take this opportunity to talk about action instead of fashion.  Planners, by definition, do things for other people.  You need a servant’s heart to be in this industry, and if you don’t have a servant’s heart, you may want to reconsider this as your career choice.  Here’s a glance at some amazing planners across the country are what they are doing to give back:

Featured Givers Eliana Baucicault of Elly B Events, Atlanta, Georgia (Eliana’s husband has loved ones in Haiti) pledged a percentage of her profits for the rest of the year, to Wyclef Jean’s Yele foundation.

Nadine Poliard of Nadine Lynn Weddings, Atlanta, Georgia – Nadine initially feared she may have lost loved ones in the first earthquake – she has since received reports that everyone is accounted for.  Nadine organized a grass roots type of e-mail to her friends, encouraging donations to various organizations while updating us on the status of her family.  Just this morning, I received another e-mail message and a tweet from her in regards to H.R. 4462, a bill to allow all Haiti-related charitable deductions made through March 1, 2010 to be deducted on 2009 income tax filings.  A broad, bipartisan coalition in the U.S. House has already passed HR 4462—now, we just need to encourage Senate to support the bill.  You can submit an e-mail now through the Habitat for Humanity website.

Lindsay Pitt of TOAST Events, Atlanta, Georgia pledged donations of $50 to the Red Cross for every couple scheduling a consultation, and will double the donation when a contract is written by the end of January.

Bridal Bar Atlanta pledged $20 to the American Red Cross for each bride who schedules an appointment with The Bridal Bar or books a Bridal Bar event professional all this week.

Emilie Duncan of Emilie Duncan Event Planning & Kasey Skobel-Conyers of Bliss Events of Ohio are organizing an annual event called Columbus Cakes for a Cause to benefit the Mid-Ohio Food bank and Operation Feed.

Latrice Cushenberry of Bridal Opulence in Nashville, Tennessee spent Monday “on” volunteer duty instead of taking the day “off”.  Second Harvest of Nashville coordinated over 200 volunteers that committed 600 plus hours on MLK day to help sort food for the emergency food box program and pack backpacks for hungry children in middle Tennessee.

Thank you ladies, for giving your time and financial resources to our communities (and beyond) and for setting an example for the rest of us.

I’d like to reiterate my challenge to all wedding & event planners: have you incorporated a service or charity into your business?  If so, please tell us about it – I’ll write another post on the ways planners across the country give back to their communities.  Please provide the name and website address for your chosen charity, what your goal is for 2010, (i.e., a certain number of service hours, or a particular dollar amount) and any other information you feel we should share.

Feel free to leave comments here regarding this post or what the ladies mentioned here are doing in their communities.

How would you describe your personal style?  That is a hard question because it depends on my mood.  I would say classic chic, with modern touches through accessories, I love chunky and fun jewelry and great scarves.  Accessories can make a simple outfit pop!  You must accessorize!

What is your “go-to” meeting attire?  When I schedule meetings through the week, its typically business casual, slacks & blouse with a kitten heel or unique flats,  On the weekends I tend to dress down for meetings wearing a wide leg denim trouser & trendy top with accessories.  {Get the trend…accessories!)

What is your “go-to” evening industry event attire? (i.e., associational meeting, vendor or venue open house, etc.)  Dress trousers with a dressy blouse or blazer.  I always try to have a conversation piece with my jewelry.  It sometimes breaks the ice especially when at networking events.  I have found that people will comment/compliment you on things that catch their eye, which in turn makes it easier for them to approach you and strike up a conversation.

What is your attire for wedding/event day set-up? For the day of the wedding, I typically wear all black.  I have some favorite wide leg black yoga pants, that really can be dressed up or down and they are super comfortable paired with a black t-shirt with simple jewelry.  My shoes are very important because many events its normal to work a 12 – 14 hour day, so I wear Cole Haan shoes because of their Nike Air cushion insoles.

What is your attire for actual wedding/event?  My typical attire for the wedding/event is black trousers & monogrammed company black blazer.  I try to jazz up the uniform with a bold necklace that compliments the wedding color palette.  Shoes – Cole Haan zebra print loafers or a patent leather black Cole Haan loafer.

What style and brand of shoes do you wear on wedding/event days?  See above – Cole Haan – I am very loyal!

What are your favorite jeans and why?  I have 2 favorites – Gap Long & Lean because I am a short and they really elongate my legs, especially with a great heel shoe.  I also like Seven jeans in dark denim trouser boot cut because they can be dressed up or down.

What are a few of your favorite cosmetic products?  I am very loyal to MAC Cosmetics Studio Fix Foundation.  I am beginning to play up my eyes a lot more and am learning to do a smoky eye.  I am loving MAC Cosmetics Eye Shadows & also on the cost effective end, I have found E.L.F. Shadows are great along with their eyelash/eyebrow gel combo mascaraL’Oreal Volume Shocking Mascara is a staple in my makeup case also!

What products are in your current skincare regimen?  I use an African Black Soap Bar to cleanse my face daily.  It has really helped to even out my skin tone.  I follow that with a Nutrimin C Reality Day Creme, SPF 8.  Every 8 weeks I try to have a microdermabrasion treatment.  In between the treatments, I create a scrub for my face using baking soda & water and it works as a great exfoliator.

Who is your favorite celebrity style icon and why?  I love First Lady Michelle Obama’s style.  She is classic & timeless with flair.  Also, Kimora Lee Simmons for how she wears her accessories.

Please share with us (in 50 words or less) your favorite beauty or style tip: Your personal style makes you unique, accessories create that WOW factor – don’t be afraid to be different!

How would you describe your personal style? Feminine, classic and preppy.

What is your “go-to” meeting attire? I am almost always in a dress or a skirt. I like tailored dresses and heels or cute skirts with matching sweaters. I am old fashioned and while I love wearing jeans, I save them for the weekends!

What is your “go-to” evening industry event attire? A brightly colored dress, heels and a fun necklace.

What is your attire for wedding/event day set-up? I try to look nice while being practical. Depending on the event I may wear the same evening attire. I wear black Coach flats during the day and tights or leggings.

What is your attire for actual wedding/event? A black or dark colored dress that is stylish but conservative. I like to blend with the guests but not look too fancy or impractical. I have a fabulous chunky pearl necklace that really glams up a plain sheath dress.

What style and brand of shoes do you wear on wedding/event days? Cole Haan Nike Air Pumps. I have brown and black patent leather and they are the best shoes ever. You can literally run in them (and I have) and they feel like sneakers. I wear flats during the day until guests or wedding party arrive then switch into the Cole Haans and they haven’t failed me yet!

What are your favorite jeans and why? I love my Citizens for Humanity jeans that have a little rhinestone flair on the pockets. They fit perfectly, are the right length and I feel sassy with the sparkle!

What are a few of your favorite cosmetic products? I have a bit of a cosmetic addiction. I don’t know how I ever lived without Latisse, it makes my addiction to mascara ten times better! I love Lash Stiletto mascara. I adore Chanel and Laura Mercier lipgloss.

What products are in your current skincare regimen? I use a brand of skin care called Elemis.

Who is your favorite celebrity style icon and why? Reece Witherspoon.  She is a nice southern girl that always looks classy and put together even when out running errands.

Please share with us (in 50 words or less) your favorite beauty or style tip: Dress up! I feel that there are very few reasons people get dressed up anymore. Even the theatre, country clubs and church are embracing denim and casual attire. Be the one to stand out by looking ravishing and making those who didn’t dressed up envy your class!

Jeni DuBard, Atlanta, Georgia

Note from Jeannine: I am so pleased to share with you this planner who is such a dear friend to me.  Jeni DuBard was the very first intern at my wedding planning company, FAVOR Events.  Jeni came to us through Georgia State University, where she was pursuing an Event Planner Certification through the School of Hospitality.  Jeni interned for only three months before I hired her to act as our Director of Tailored Services.  During her time with us, she designed and developed our blog, as well as contributed numerous articles on wedding related topics.  Quite honestly, our blog (FAVOR Events) has not been the same since she left!  Jeni has an incredible work ethic, is so warm and caring, and has an amazing, polished sense of style.  She now works as the Social Events Coordinator for Low Country Catering here in Atlanta and is doing amazing things to further develop their wedding business.  Please read her bio to learn more about my sweet friend, Jeni DuBard.

How would you describe your personal style?  I would call my style “casual classic”.  I love tailored, classic pieces and I love to dress up, but most events in my life call for casual clothing.

What is your “go-to” meeting attire? It depends on the meeting, but I try to find a balance between being “too casual” or “too over-dressed” by mixing the pieces in my closet.  I will wear jeans with blazers and a big necklace, dresses with jeweled flip flops, etc.

What is your “go-to” evening industry event attire? (i.e., associational meeting, vendor or venue open house, etc.)  Depending on the season, it is usually pants and a great top (Fall/Winter) or a dress (Spring/Summer).  I love dresses!

What is your attire for wedding/event day set-up?   For warm weather weddings I prefer knit dresses with J.Crew flip flops.  In cool weather its jeans and a sweater with flats.

What is your attire for actual wedding/event?   Nine times out of ten it is some variation of a black dress – usually paired with a bold necklace or bracelet.

What style and brand of shoes do you wear on wedding/event days?  I always start in heels but end up in flip flops!

What are your favorite jeans and why?  Joe’s "Honey" boot cut or skinny.  They are the only jeans I have found that fit exactly right!

What are a few of your favorite cosmetic products?  NARS blush, Dior Show Mascara, Chanel lip gloss, Stila lip glaze

What products are in your current skincare regimen?  I have problematic skin, so I use a combination of dermatologist prescribed products.  I love Korres Moisturizer, though!

Who is your favorite celebrity style icon and why?  Reese Witherspoon – because of her classic style.  She always looks polished and pulled together.

Please share with us (in 50 words or less) your favorite beauty or style tip:  I’ve always been taught to buy pieces that will last.  I can rationalize spending money on a piece if I know it will stand the test of time.  This is especially true of shoes and handbags.  Nothing says “pulled together” more than a great pair of shoes and a well made bag.

Jenifer L. Hammond – Vail, Colorado

Note from Jeannine:  I am so pleased to share with you this week’s Stylish Planner, Jenifer L. Hammond.  I have never met Jenifer in person, but she was one of the first planners to send in a submission to be featured.  (Thank you Jenifer for being so enthusiastic about the blog!)  A fellow Anthropologie and White House | Black Market enthusiast, Jenifer has a very creative sense of style and she reflects that creativity in her attire by wearing bold accessories and colors.  I love that Jenifer embraces her curly hair rather than trying to fight it.  In addition to running a successful wedding planning business, Jenifer is a mother of three children, and wife to Fred who is a DJ.  You can follow her on Twitter @IDoWeddingVail, and check out her style secrets here.  Enjoy!

How would you describe your personal style? Classic and artistic

What is your “go-to” meeting attire?  Grey suede Victorian-style button up boots, over black or blue jeans, grey v-neck tee-shirt and a quirky, red, ruffled sweater from Anthropologie. Beaded pendulum earrings, silver and blue topaz bangles, large chunky glittery rings – and my pink Vaio laptop!

What is your “go-to” evening industry event attire?  Black high heel boots, black jeans and black strapless corset top with white floral embroidery from White House | Black Market.

What is your attire for wedding/event day set-up?  Because I work at 8,500 – 10,000 feet altitude this varies by
season. Sometimes it’s jeans and snow boots, and a cowlneck cashmere sweater, in the mid-summer its jeans, orange leather flats from Bjorn with an orange flower detail, and an interesting Anthropologie top with lots of floral or beaded details.

What is your attire for actual wedding/event?  I like to look like I belong at these gorgeous events so my “uniform” for 2009 was a black lace, strapless dress, from White House | Black Market.  Strappy 4” black heels with chiffon rosettes, a “watch” ring, bangles, and long dangling crystal earrings, and a beautiful crystal clip or beaded hair comb.

What style and brand of shoes do you wear on wedding/event days?  For set-up, flat and funky Bjorn ballet slippers in orange leather. For ceremony/dinner/dancing, a variety of high heels but often shoes from White House | Black Market.

What are your favorite jeans and why?  What are your favorite jeans and why? I wear one basic pair, they are designed by Miss Me and have a beautifully detailed gothic cross on the back pocket with crystals, and finished with gorgeous rivets and buttons. I love them because they are pretty, and they are long enough, which is amazing because in my grey boots I’m approx 6’2”.

What are a few of your favorite cosmetic products?  I live in an arid climate and have dry skin to boot. I love Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer. Keeps my skin tone even (I’m quite ruddy) and my skin looking soft. I’m also allergic to petroleum and mineral oil so am constantly looking for a good gloss that avoids those ingredients.  Currently I’m wearing a MAC Cosmetics lip-gloss.

What products are in your current skincare regimen?  I use a skin care system recommended by my dermatologist called Clenziderm. It helps control breakouts.

Who is your favorite celebrity style icon and why?  I love Jennifer Garner. She’s my age and always looks so beautiful, graceful and feminine.

Please share with us (in 50 words or less) your favorite beauty or style tip:  I believe that part of my job is creating beauty. I like to wear things that are interesting, a large, multi-layered Peruvian opal style necklace from Anthropologie, large enameled or beaded rings, or maybe just a blouse with delicate, intricate details and finishes. These items help me look stylish no matter where I am and hopefully convey confidence and capability as well as creativity.

Note from Jeannine: I am so excited to share this week’s featured planner with you!  I had the pleasure of meeting Saundra at Eventology 2009 this year.  Saundra is one of those people that you just feel immediately drawn to.  She is very approachable, warm and genuine.  She has this amazing whimsical sense of style that I love because upon meeting her, you instantly get a sense of her personality.  NOTE:  Saundra is a perfect example of personal branding done very well.  What you see in Saundra’s style is what her clients receive when they hire Planning Forever Events – a fun experience with a passionate planner who is dedicated to executing a perfect day with a contagious smile.  Look at these photos, read her submission, then check out her websites to see what I mean.  She is consistently fun, confident and professional throughout her branding.  We could all learn a thing or two from Saundra – so be sure to attend Eventology 2010 next April, where Saundra will again be speaking!  Her topic?  Priced to Sell!  Cultivating Your Service Offerings – trust me, you will NOT want to miss her presentation (or the other wonderful speakers at this fantastic conference)!

How would you describe your personal style?  I would categorize myself as “sporty chic with an eclectic flair”. I love clean lines (like the Gap and Express) but also love to break out a vintage coat or unusual scarf.

What is your “go-to” meeting attire?  Designer jeans or slacks, blouse, and sometimes a blazer. In the summer I’ll wear skirts, surprisingly I own very few dresses.

What is your “go-to” evening industry event attire?  Fancy blouse, dress slacks and some unique accessory.

What is your attire for wedding/event day set-up?  We do a lot of setup work with design/décor so I’ll wear a company t-shirt and cargo pants. I adore the big pockets so I can carry my phone and anything else I might need.

What is your attire for actual wedding/event?  Dressy slacks, fun blouse, a jacket (which comes off in hot weather). I have never, ever worn a dress to coordinate a wedding. I actually do not want to blend in with the guests because I am not one.

What style and brand of shoes do you wear on wedding/event days?  Well, obviously, my “brand” has evolved into wearing very clean and colorful Chuck Taylors. I sometimes will wear comfortable black leather shoes, depending on the type of event. However, my brides get so excited and can’t wait to see what color I will wear. Planners who wear heels for a 16 hour days, I really caution you. Your back and legs will not be kind to you later.

What are your favorite jeans and why?  Gap jeans usually look the best on me, although I have some cute Levi’s (they’ve come back). Really, anything that will make my derriere look good is fine with me. It’s all in the pockets and where they are located.

What are a few of your favorite cosmetic products? I have olive skin in the summer but I’m Casper in the winter, so I use Neutrogena Build a Tan on my face. I also love Maybelline Shiny-Licious lip gloss. Ridiculously inexpensive and a great product.

What products are in your current skincare regimen?  Neutrogena Healthy Skin Visibly Even foaming cleanser and Lubriderm lotion.  Read “Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me”   – it will change your life.

Who is your favorite celebrity style icon and why?  Jennifer Aniston. She’s beautiful but not in a “perfect” way. She always looks comfortable whether she is in a cocktail dress, gown or jeans/t-shirts.

Please share with us (in 50 words or less) your favorite beauty or style tip:  Do not be afraid to be unique with your style. It’s fun to wear something that will cause total strangers to strike up a conversation with you. I also think it’s important to feel “comfortable” in your own skin and to not dress in a certain way because that is what everyone expects. I’m rebellious.

  • Stylish Planner – WeWed 2010 & Brides Panel:

[...] Saundra Hadley needs no introduction. She is by far one of the people that I admire most in the industry. At WeWed, Saundra shared tidbits of her Get Real Sales Strategy, specifically speaking on “closing the deal”. I could listen to her presentation a hundred times and still come away with new ideas to implement in my business. If you haven’t already, definitely subscribe to her blog and follow her on Twitter @planningforever and @SaundraHadley. Saundra has several Get Real Sales Workshops scheduled in coming months – if she is coming to your city, be sure not to miss her! Side note: Saundra was one of the first five ladies to be featured on The Stylish Planner. You can view her feature here: Saundra Hadley Style Profile. [...]

Saundra is incredible! The pictures here are from my daughter’s wedding this past October. I don’t know too many people that include their planner in the photo’s but she was as important as the cake! As a widowed MOB – i could not have gotten through all this with out her. I sent her a pair of glitter Chucks as a thank you – because she just shines.

what is a stylish planner? blog contest! November 19, 2009 posted in Contests,Featured Planners

Or, said another way, what makes a planner stylish?

I like this question so much, I think I’ll have a contest to get your feedback!  Read on…

The thing about style is that it is subjective.  Things that I place a high style quotient on may be the worst thing you’ve ever seen and vice versa.  My definition of a stylish planner would be someone that is grace under pressure, appears fresh and put together for the duration of the event day.  Anyone can be stylish at a planners luncheon or a new venue grand opening when all that is to be done is to mingle and imbibe.  However, it is HARD to be stylish on the wedding/event day – all the very looong day!  Can I get an AMEN?!

I have one terrific book to giveaway to the best comment posted in reply to this question.  Aptly named, The Little Black Book of Style by Nina Garcia (of Project Runway).

Little Black Book

Here’s the jacket description:  Every time you dress, you assert your identity. With style, you tell the world your story. In that way, style affords you opportunities to think about your appearance as a quality of your creative character. The Little Black Book of Style helps you to explore your own fashion voice—the piece of you that joyously revels in the glamorous experience of creating your best self. From cultivating good taste to guarding against definite fashion faux pas, Nina Garcia offers readers the ultimate guide to follow when it comes to dressing their best. Including tips on how and when to wear an outfit, occasion-appropriate wear, advice on how to combine colors and textures, and inspiration on how to achieve your own signature look, you learn how to experiment, storyboard, archive, and play. Timeless and universal, this book seeks to remind women that eternal style is internal style, and that everyone has what it takes to discover themselves through the colorful palette that is fashion.

You’ll love this book for its function as your fashion and style encyclopedia.  Also, it has some of the coolest artwork I’ve seen in a long time!

Share your thoughts until midnight on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 and the best comment will receive the book delivered to your door by your friendly neighborhood postman.  Think of it as a Christmas gift from me to you!

Inquiring minds want to know…what do you think makes a planner stylish?

  • Latrice - Bridal Opulence:

    Style to me is all about how you feel once you put something on. {Honestly a person can make sweats & sneakers look good its all in the attitude of confidence once you put it on}

I have a very classic style however I choose to show my personality with my accessories. This goes for the day of events. I will typically start the day with wide leg slacks that I feel comfortable in slouching around & a tee shirt. However for the event, I do take about 20 minutes to freshen up, redo my hair & makeup. I always wear black to events either a dress or my staple monogrammed blazer but I add the pop of color with my accessories & typically they match the wedding color palette.

  • Valerie of Southern Fete:

Wow! Great question! Shlepping around decor, running in heels, sweating etc. while brides and bridesmaids are looking their best always makes me think “Oh my goodness! Look away. I’m hideous!”
For wedding days, I try to dress effortlessly and classic. I’m not trying to win any fashion awards, just look professional. A white button down and jeans and my boots (they give me a heel without being uncomfortable). Or in the deep South where summer weddings are scorching, I’ll wear a jersey cotton dress.

  • Meredith Wullkotte of Risque Boudoir:

So true! I recently started working with a professional stylist to provide all my clients with a professional pre-session fashion consultation. She is also on hand during all sessions and it makes such a difference in the way my girls feel in front of the camera! There’s a confidence that radiates when the woman inside you matches who people see on the outside! Every piece you chose to wear (or not wear) says something about you!

  • Andria of Andria Lewis Events:

Truer words have never been spoken. It is really important to me to appear as polished as possible on wedding day. But, when you are lifting 100lb boxes and your Blackberry is going off every 5 minutes that becomes difficult. I hope I win the contest so I can learn a few tips and tricks from the book.
