stylish planner of the week: ivy robinson February 25, 2010 posted in Featured Planners

stylishplanner-logoblack

Featured Stylish Planner of the Week – February 25, 2010

Ivy Robinson – Charlotte, North Carolina

Note from Jeannine:  I first heard of Ivy Robinson when I saw her on an episode of Whose Wedding Is It Anyway? on the Style Network.  I was immediately drawn to her sense of humor and found myself wishing for more episodes with Ivy!  She has wonderful energy and a great sense of personal style that you can see carried over into her event designs.  Ivy’s style is a great example of being true to yourself.  I hope you enjoy getting to know more about Ivy as much as I have!

IvyRobinsonCollage

Company name:  Ivy Robinson Weddings & Events

Years in Business: 7

Website: www.ivyrobinson.com

Blog:  www.ivyrobinson.com/blog

How would you describe your personal style: I personally like bold colors and strong contrasts and patterns, I always look for one element that is different & interesting.  I would totally rock a dress from Target and throw some designer shoes & purse on with it.

What is your "go-to" meeting attire?  Typically I would wear a fun dress or skirt but it also depends on where the meeting is held.  If I’m going to a corporate head quarters then I probably wouldn’t wear my cowboy boots…but then again on second thought…I wouldn’t put it past me.

What is you "go-to" evening industry event attire?  My mood for the day dictates what I wear {*smile*}.  or evening industry event affairs you would normally see me in a fun jacket, skirt or dress.

What is your attire for wedding day set-up?  VERY Comfortable yet still professional.

What is your attire for actual wedding?  Being on my feet for 15-18 hours on a wedding day requires a comfortable dress & shoes that I can move around quickly in. Wedding days aren’t fashion shows for me so I’ll pass on the 4 inch stilettos.

What style and brand of shoes do you wear on wedding/event days?  Whatever matches…there is no particular brand that I wear on wedding days. But typically they are flats or with small heels.

What are your favorite jeans and why?  Hudson & Dylan George jeans are my favorite. They aren’t as friendly on the bank account but they are so comfortable and wear well!

What are a few of your favorite cosmetic products?  My make up is a hodgepodge of things! You’ll find Lancôme Definicils Mascara, Estee Lauder foundation, MAC Cosmetics Mineral Powder & blush, Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick, and random lip glosses from the drug store.

What products are in your current skincare regimen?  Obagi & Burts Bees

Who is your favorite celebrity style icon and why?  I love the humbleness & confidence of Reece Witherspoon and Kate Hudson and the sophistication that Jackie Kennedy displayed in her style.

Please share with us (in 50 words or less) your favorite beauty or style tip:  I never leave the house without mascara & lip gloss!  Those are a must have and if I am running out the door it only takes 1 minute to apply Voila!.  My top tip is to have confidence from within and your beauty will naturally follow.

reasons you’re not losing weight by kiana lewis February 24, 2010 posted in Diet/Health

Kiana’s philosophy about fitness is, “Exercise, your body will appreciate it."

kiana_l ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

From Kiana:

Being a personal trainer for over 9 years, I have heard the words “weight loss” uttered hundreds of times.  With that said, I’ve seen many start off pretty good; visiting the gym consistently, watching food intake, and working hard, but then everything comes to a halt.  What goes wrong? Is it the eating?  Is it missing that one day at the gym that throws everything off?  There are a number of reasons why, but today I will point out a few common reasons.

Reason 1–Skipping meals/starving in order to lose weight

Life today is so fast-paced.  We eat on the run, skip breakfast, and usually have a heavy dinner.  This leads to a slower metabolism.  It is very important to NEVER skip breakfast.  Literally, it is the most essential meal of the day.  Think of eating breakfast as BREAKING THE FAST.

Along with eating breakfast, add 4-5 more small meals per day, every 2.5-3 hours.  Feeding your body constantly ensures an increase in metabolism over time and it helps the body to digest the food better.  One key point to remember—skipping meals causes your body to flip on the survival mode, meaning, it will store fat because it does not know when the next meal will come.

Reason 2—Overtraining

Our bodies are like fine machines that need caring.  Going to the gym on a daily basis, continuously lifting weights, with no days of rest in between, can hinder your weight loss progress.  Signs of overtraining include fatigue, insomnia, regular soreness, and injuries.  Allowing your body to rest and recover is a vital part of achieving at any fitness routine.

Reason—3 Lack of Sleep

We’ve all heard, “get 6-8 hours of sleep.”  That applies to both exercisers and non-exercisers.  More notably, those who exercise with weight loss goals should really try to get those hours in.  Sleeping under 6 hours causes levels of leptin to lower, which is a protein hormone that helps suppress your appetite.  In turn, ghrelin levels are increased; a hormone that stimulates hunger.

To sum it up, get at least 6 hours of sleep per night.  Otherwise, your appetite will increase, counterattacking your goal of weight loss.

Reason 4—Lack of Water Intake

It may be hard to believe, but good ole’ H2O lowers the amount of fat stored in the body.  If you neglect your water intake, your kidneys start to get lazy; they end up giving their work to your liver, which is responsible for helping the body burn stored fat for energy.  That means, if the liver is doing 2 jobs, it does neither 100%; its fat burning potential is decreased causing your body to store more fat.

**DRINK 8+ glass of H2O per day!

I’ve only touched on a few reasons, but I hope these tips help you in your weight loss journey.  Feel free to contact me with questions at bewellandmarry@gmail.com.

warning: the wedding scammers – a list of names February 23, 2010 posted in Tips & Tricks (Planning)

NOTE:  Scroll down for an update to this post and a list of names!  (Original post written on 2/23/2010 – updated on 3/22/2010)

You know the saying, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned?”  Now that I have received this e-mail again and see that these leeches are still out there scamming, I’m quite ready for retribution.  I hope you will review this information carefully and share it with your fellow professionals.

I received this e-mail request for proposal today and immediately recognized it as a scam.  How did I know?  Well…, keep reading…

scammer1Please do not mistake me for a really smart person.  The reason I knew the e-mail I received today is a scam is that unfortunately, I fell for an eerily similar e-mail on June 9th, 2009:

scammer2“Mr. Woodgate” and I corresponded via e-mail from 6/9/2009 through 6/22/2009.  Our e-mails centered around the issue of payment more than any other topic.  I frequently expressed concern that his fiancé “Daisy” did not care which date in October we chose for the wedding, as well as the fact that he never inquired about specific locations in Atlanta.  From my very first response to him, I requested that we speak by phone and even offered to call him in “London”, but he was always conveniently unavailable.  He insisted that deposits be made via Credit Card, yet he refused to use PayPal.  At this point, I replied that we would need to speak prior to moving forward and despite my many polite attempts to follow up, I never heard from him again.

From doing a little research on this scam, I learned that they forward you credit card details to pay for initial deposits (to yourself and other vendors as well), then ask you to process payments to a specific vendor (of their choosing) or to a “logistics agent” that is unable to accept credit cards.  Initially, it seems that the credit card has been processed, and that money has been deposited to your account, but later, the credit card is identified as stolen and you are on the line for the money.

It also seems that Mr. Woodgate has many aliases such as:  Engr or Mr. Randy Wrye, Dr. Gibson Whyte, Dr. Mike Ashley, Owen Fletcher, Paul Atkinson, Frank Anderson, David Walter, Leonard B. Frank, David Roy and the list goes on and on.

The scammers have expanded their operation to include requests for proposals to dance studios, restaurants, and even scamming women on dating sites.   There are over 200 entries on this site alone:  Topix – Wedding Scam

A fellow planner shares her story and some great recommendations on her blog here:  Perfect Memories Events.

It seems that they are refining their game as they go.  They are targeting vendors that are new to the industry.  They are providing more and more details regarding the wedding, and in some cases are now even providing phone numbers (that someone seemingly legitimate answers) and mailing addresses.

I was very excited to help Mr. Woodgate and Daisy with their wedding.  I have a lot of home town pride and was thrilled that they wanted to be married in Atlanta.  Admittedly, there was that element of international intrigue.  I always have that feeling I call “new client crush” when I am approached by a potential client – it’s an honor to be a part of making someone’s dream come true.  I was excited to take their business to vendors that have been so kind to refer me over the years.  I fell for this hook, line and sinker, and would have proceeded if not for the red flags with the financial arrangements.

I hope this information helps you avoid wasting time or money on scammers.  Please feel free to pass this post along to others, and contact me if you have any questions at all.  Has this happened to anyone else?  Feel free to share your experience here.

UPDATE:  I received the e-mail below on 3/17/2010

I replied as follows:

Amazingly, I received a reply that “he” would call.  Simultaneous to speaking with me, the scammers were also corresponding with my sweet friend, Teras at T Evenire Atlanta Invitations & Event Planning, also in Atlanta.  The very next day, I received another request for proposal from him.  When I pointed out that we had corresponded, he replied that we had not.  I forwarded him our series of e-mails and that is the last I heard from him.  I entered an update today on the Topix.com Forum dedicated to the scammers.  I suggest that anyone receiving one of these scam e-mails comment below to add to the list of names below.  We will likely never see the scammers brought to justice, but we can work together and share info to keep our wedding and event planner friends from getting involved with them.

tuesday beauty: african-american skin care February 23, 2010 posted in Beauty

Note from Jeannine:  Today I am so pleased to introduce another new contributor to The Stylish Planner!  Christiana Greene of POLISHED "The Image & Style Consultants", a premiere image consulting firm in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Fashion Merchandising from Philadelphia University in Philadelphia, PA.  As a stylist at POLISHED, Christiana puts her strong passion for fashion to good use by helping women find and embrace their personal style while enhancing their greatest assets.  In her spare time, she enjoys frequenting thrift shops, making jewelry, baking cupcakes, being apart of the "green" movement and hanging out with her two dogs Toby and Bumper.  Christiana will be our Image and Style contributor, writing twice a month on topics such as African-American skin care, beauty trends, image and attire.  Christiana can be reached via e-mail at Christiana@PolishedImageandStyle.com and be sure to follow her on Twitter @PolishedCG.

christiana3From Christiana:

When I shop for skin care products and think about my daily skin care regimen, I go for what works best for my skin type, age and complexion.  There are a decent amount of products out there for African-American women; you just have to know where to look.  This spring, before you get into the makeup trends, the most important thing is to have great skin (a clear glowing complexion).  The easiest way to get a beautiful glowing complexion is, of course, a good healthy diet, proper exercise and a decent amount of sleep.  In addition to these key attributes, using the appropriate skin care products and regimen also play a big role in obtaining great skin, which is why I’m going to share with you a few products that work wonderfully on African-American skin.

For normal, dry or sensitive skin, I recommend:

Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin Bright and Healthy Ultra Gentle collection, $73 (they also have a version called Bright and Clear collection for acne-prone and oily skin).  Available at www.rxforbrownskin.com.  Specifically created for skin of color, these products are fragrance-free, propylene-glycol free, lanolin-free, alcohol-free, and dye-free which means they are super gentle on your skin, while protecting it from everyday pollutants.

Rx for Brown Skin

For oily and combination skin, I recommend:

Aveeno Clear Complexion products, $23.50 for cleanser and moisturizer; available at Target and Wal-Mart.  Since Aveeno products are made with soy, its natural benefits help evens your skin tone and texture while clearing your pores without over-drying it. It’s very gentle on your skin yet highly effective.

Aveeno

To get rid of dark spots, you should try:

Clinique Even Better Skin Tone Correcting Moisturizer with SPF 20, $42.50 (they also have an Even Better Skin Tone corrector to pair with the moisturizer for every skin type).  Available at Macy’s and www.clinique.com.  This skin-tone correcting product is made to gently erase dark spots, age spots, and acne scars in just 4-6 weeks. Plus, it contains SPF 20 to help maintain the correction.

clip_image004

Clinique

La Roche-Posay Mela-D Serum Anti-Dark Spot Concentrate, $55.  Available at CVS and www.laroche-posay.us.  This effective formula is gentle enough for sensitive skin and is light weight enough to leave your skin feeling refreshed. The active ingredient is Kojic Acid, which reduces the appearance of dark spots.  From LaRoche-Posay:  Clinical proven efficacy* over 8 weeks: 18% decrease in dark spots; 50% increase in skin’s radiance; 23% decrease in discoloration.

LaRoche-Posay

All of these products have been clinically-proven to help nurture all skin complexions. No matter how fair or dark your skin tone is, you should always commit to a regimen that consists of cleansing, toning and moisturizing.  Also, in addition to this three-step procedure, drinking an 8 oz. glass of water before bed helps keep skin supple and hydrated especially during the winter.

Do you have a skincare item that you swear by?  Please share!

what to wear series: to the rehearsal February 22, 2010 posted in Controversy

Today I am continuing in a series called “What to wear” for wedding and event planners.  Over the last couple of months we have covered the following topics:

What to wear: for wedding/event set-up

What to wear: to a client meeting

What to wear: to the wedding/event

What to wear: to evening events

These topics have had some of the highest number of visits on the blog, which tells me that what you wear while representing your business is important to you.  One last post is planned for next Monday, “What to wear to wear on your day off”.  If there are any additional topics regarding what to wear that you would like me to cover, just send me an e-mail to  info@thestylishplanner.com to let me know and I’ll be glad to cover it!

For a wedding planner, the ceremony rehearsal can go a couple of different ways:

1)  The ceremony rehearsal is at a church/synagogue/temple

2)  The ceremony rehearsal is at an event venue, which could possibly be outdoors

In my experience, ceremony rehearsals in a place of worship usually are conducted by a staff member or a wedding guild volunteer.  In this case, I am usually there as an observer.  Many times this is my first opportunity to meet the groom and/or his family, so I try to get to know them a bit and get a feel for any potential issues between the families, or if the groom’s family requires help of any kind.

I grew up in a very conservative church in which women were required to wear skirts or dresses.  Because of that, I do tend to choose one of these options to wear to rehearsals in a house of worship.  Disclaimer:  I am not saying that all planners should wear a dress or skirt to a rehearsal in a house of worship.  I realize that many of you may feel this way of thinking is ridiculous.  I find this to be a “safe” choice that I don’t later regret.  Also, I happen to like dresses and skirts, so wearing them does not take me out of my comfort zone at all.

For church rehearsals, I usually choose a feminine blouse and skirt or a floral/print dress.  I like the opportunity to wear a little color instead of the conservative black that I usually wear for the actual wedding day.  If I am coordinating the ceremony, I wear a low heel or flats.  If I am observing, I like to pull out some of my great heels.  I find the rehearsal is a great time to show your sense of style to the wedding party, (especially bridesmaids) which often contains one of more engaged persons i.e. – potential clients!

Also, I never wear anything even slightly revealing to a church rehearsal.  We’ve all been in situations where the “church ladies” resent our presence at all, so why give them further reason to dislike us?  Also, your couples are having their ceremony in a church because of their beliefs (or their parents beliefs) so be sure to show your respect in attire and in attitude.  Anything tight fitting, showing cleavage, midriff or too much leg is a no-no.

For event venue rehearsals, I feel that you can be a little more casual.  I have worn dress slacks to event venue rehearsals before.  If you are going to be outdoors, you should think about where you will be walking – if the ceremony will take place on a lawn, go with a casual, flat shoe.

Here are two examples of Spring 2010 outfits that I would consider wearing to a ceremony rehearsal:

J Crew Skirt Kate Spade Dress

On the left: J. Crew; on the right: Kate Spade

Do you have a particular style that you adhere to for wedding rehearsal attire?  I’d love to hear your thoughts!

fabulous fashion friday: cole haan nike air shoes February 19, 2010 posted in Fashion

Spend some time in a room full of wedding and event planners and the question will inevitably come up: “What kind of shoes do you wear to the wedding/event?”  We all know the pain of a long day spent on your feet, with much of the day spent sprinting from task to task.  Personally, my body pain is usually gone after a good nights sleep, a nice hot bath and a good workout.  However, sometimes the soles of my feet hurt for days after a wedding.  After my first year in business, I began a quest for the perfect shoe.  What I found was exquisite patent leather well constructed beauty in the form of the Cole Haan Nike Air collection.

If you’ve read through any of our featured planner style profiles, you may recall that several planners recommend these shoes – Lindsay Pitt and Latrice Cushenberry are just a couple that come to mind.  Add me to that list, please!

I fell in love with Cole Haan years ago when Oprah interviewed Gordon Thompson, Creative Director of Cole Haan.  Thompson is the genius behind the Nike Air collection of high heel shoes and a former architect who spent years working with Nike in their Sports Research Lab.  When Nike purchased Cole Haan in the 1980’s, Thompson began an intensive research project prior to developing the Cole Haan/Nike Air line.  Tests revealed that the weight transfer to a woman’s foot while walking in a heel is so significant that her body weight comes down with the same force as if she were running.  Thompson’s research showed that even in a heel, appropriate cushioning can counter-balance the pressure.  After a  series of blind tests in the lab, the first line of 14 shoe styles was released in Spring 2006.  Each shoe in the Cole Haan/Nike Air collection utilizes Nike Zoom air bag technology to cushion the ball and heel of the foot.  By lining the interior of these Cole Haan Nike Air heels with strategically placed Nike Zoom air bags, the stress and pain caused by the weight transfer from the raised heel to the toe is counterbalanced.  Call me a geek, but I really appreciate the science behind these shoes!

Today, I thought I would highlight four different styles, at least one of which is sure to appeal to every planner.

Cole Haan High Cole Haan Wedge

Cole Haan Mid Cole Haan Ballet

Photos: www.colehaan.com

The shoe on the top left is the Carma OT Air Sling.  These shoes come with me to every wedding.  I usually wear them during the ceremony and through most of the reception, changing into a flat once the dances, toasts and cake cutting are complete.  Throughout the evening, as needed, I will slip into the flats – a simple, patent leather style.  I also wear the heels out in the evenings a lot for industry events or date night with my hubby.  This shoe is also available in a pump if you would prefer that over the slingback style shown above.  Both styles retail for $298.00.

The shoe on the top right is the Air Lainey Wedge 55.  A wedge is a great choice over a regular heel because of the extra support that the wedge offers.  If you aren’t completely comfortable with heels because you tend to “teeter-totter” a bit, a wedge is perfect for you.  You get the height of a heel with much more support and comfort.  This shoe is currently on my wish list. {*sigh*!}  It currently retails for $198.00.

The shoe on the lower left is the Ada Air Low Pump.  This mid-height heeled shoe may not be quite as stylish as others, but the chunky heel will give you more stability.  This style is on sale right now at www.colehaan.com for $149.95, marked down from $298.00.

The shoe on the lower right is the Air Andi Ballet.  This is a great choice for an all day shoe.  Even better?  Right now it is on sale in various colors for $89.95 at www.colehaan.com, marked down from $178.00.

Do you have a pair of Cole Haan shoes with Nike technology?  Which style do you like best?

baby love: maternity fashion tips from emilie duncan February 18, 2010 posted in Maternity

Note from Jeannine:  I first met sweet and sassy Emilie Duncan of Emilie Duncan Event Planning in Ohio at Eventology 2009.  She had driven to Indianapolis and was kind enough to give me and a partner in crime a ride back to our hotel from a local tattoo parlor.  (Long story best saved for another day…)  I asked Emilie late last year if she would be willing to share her thoughts on maternity fashion with The Stylish Planner readers.  Little did we both know it would be days before her due date when her feature would post!  As of this writing, Emilie is getting quite uncomfortable and is very ready to welcome her second baby girl into the world.   Emilie – best wishes for an easy delivery and a healthy and happy baby girl!

Planners, please enjoy the following interview style post from Emilie!

EmilieJeannine:  “What’s new in the world of maternity fashion? (There wasn’t much to choose from back in 2001 when I was pregnant!)”

Emilie:  “Between brick and mortar stores dedicated to maternity wear, traditional stores that carry maternity lines and online stores, there are tons of options for pregnant planners these days!  I think the biggest trend would be that pregnant women aren’t wearing giant, form hiding shirts and dresses anymore – they are celebrating their new shapes and wearing form fitting items.  It isn’t as if you can hide it so why not show it off a little?”

Jeannine:  “What kind of challenges does pregnancy present for dressing professionally for client and vendor meetings?”

Emilie:  “Comfort is a huge issue when you are pregnant. One of the main sources of discomfort I have noticed this time around is the waistbands of my pants and skirts. Waistbands come in several styles – under the belly, mid-belly and over the belly. Experiment with different styles for different activities – the under the belly pants had a tendency to literally fall down while I was walking – not the best for site visits – but I found that over the belly stayed up just fine. I found some over the belly pants are too restrictive while sitting in lengthy meetings so I try to stick with mid-belly or under the belly for those meetings. It really is trial and error and based solely on what works for you.

Also, in the end of your pregnancy, your breasts will likely become a good bit more prominent than you are used to which can lead to some interesting cleavage issues.  For some reason, many maternity designers have decided that all pregnant women want nothing more than to give the world a peek and so they cut their tops extremely low.  Invest in several maternity tanks – either cotton bra tanks or spandex – that come up a little higher for layering under low cut tops.

Another suggestion I have is to purchase tanks that are long enough so they will also cover the bottom of your belly.  Sometimes those under the belly pants will leave a gap between pants and shirt.  Invest in several tanks in a range of basic colors – you can always scrunch them up in the beginning as you will likely need the length near the end!”

Jeannine:  “Could you recommend several basics for expecting wedding and event planners to help them get them through their pregnancies in style?”

Emilie:  “A few key pieces should be able to help at various stages of pregnancy:

Belly Band:  In the beginning, your normal clothing, including suits and dress pants, may still fit everywhere but in the waistband.  Buy a couple of belly bands and you’ll be able to wear those pants even longer.  Belly bands are simply tubes of stretchy fabric that you slip over the waist band of your unbuttoned pants to help keep them up.  You’ll have more breathing room while the baby starts to grow and be a whole lot more comfortable!  The brand I have used is Bella Band but there are tons of different brands as well.

Maternity Tanks:  As I mentioned, maternity tanks are great for covering up the slice of tummy that wants to peek out of the bottom of your shirt as well as helping to cover up those new assets up top.  Certain styles (the ones made of spandex that tend to be form fitting) also serve as good support for your back as the belly begins to grow.

Maternity undies:  Don’t laugh.  You may think you can get through your pregnancy with your normal lacey underpinnings but especially as time goes on, you will likely want a little more…full coverage.  Plus, underwear made especially for maternity are more comfortable and meant to fit your changing shape.  Buy at least one pack and you’ll probably wind up back at the store for more.  And don’t worry – they make maternity thongs too!

All the rest is solely based on your personal style!  These days a woman doesn’t have to sacrifice her personal style sensibilities to accommodate the pregnancy.”

Jeannine:  “In late pregnancy, swollen feet is a very common problem for pregnant women.  What kind of shoes have you found to work best while working in the latter stage of your pregnancy?”

Emilie:  “I have terrible feet whether I am pregnant or not!  I am one of those rare people who just hate shoe shopping because I have “Flintstone Feet” – nearly as wide as they are long!  For me, finding shoes that fit is a challenge so cute, sadly, comes second.  I have always been a fan of Danskos for that reason – no, they aren’t cute but I can still walk at the end of a long day without wanting to cry.  It also helps to have shoes that can be adjusted as the day goes on so you can let them out a little.”

Jeannine:  “Have you found a “go-to” store(s) that have really worked for you during your pregnancy?  You know, a place where you could go to find casual, professional and even formal attire?”

Emilie:  “Yes, I have!  Here is a breakdown:

Professional and Dressy Pieces:  Both Motherhood and A Pea in the Pod actually have a line designed by Heidi Klum.  They have a nice in store and online selection of basic staples plus some more trendy items.  Be prepared for sticker shock – considering you can only wear the items for a limited time, maternity clothing can be extremely pricey.

Casual:  Old Navy and Target.  Both carry maternity in certain stores and a nice selection online.  Almost all my casual maternity clothing is from one of those two stores and many pieces have lasted me through both pregnancies.

Your own closet:  Don’t forget to look through your existing wardrobe to see what you can continue to use throughout your pregnancy.  Recent styles have seen longer shirts that hit low on the hip – you can likely continue to wear these throughout your pregnancy especially if they are stretchy.  Certain knit skirts can work through early pregnancy as well – but if they are short, make sure your hem doesn’t start to get wonky from the belly.  Don’t be afraid to take a look at your husband’s closet either – sometimes there is nothing better than a comfy sweatshirt from his wardrobe.”

Jeannine:  “Any tips (fashion or otherwise) for expecting planners who are wondering how to make it through their pregnancies while still working?”

Emilie:  “Plan accordingly and have great backup.  Although I have some friends who have worked right up to their due date, I was able to schedule my events to end right when I began to get really large.  You never know how pregnancy is going to affect your body and for me, both pregnancies have been different.  You might feel fantastic right up to the delivery or you might be put on bed rest.  Make sure that you have back up plans in case of an emergency for all points along the way.

Be up front with your clients and any potential clients.  As soon as you feel comfortable sharing the news, tell your existing clients exactly how you plan to handle being pregnant at their wedding or planning around maternity leave.  I have found with both pregnancies that my clients have been really excited for me and since I had a plan of action for their weddings, they were perfectly comfortable with the whole thing.  Don’t try to hide it from potential clients either – if you have a meeting set up and are 7 months pregnant, that potential client is likely going to feel blindsided if you don’t tell them up front that you are expecting!  Just as the first meeting sets the tone for the relationship, you don’t want clients wondering what you intend to surprise them with next.

More than anything else, make sure to take care of yourself and that little one growing in your belly first.  If you aren’t healthy, happy and comfortable, your clients and even more importantly, your baby will suffer.  Enjoy this time – you may be surprised that you will miss that huge belly once it is gone!”

petite fashion tips and tricks: the basics February 17, 2010 posted in Petite

Jen Wooster-McBride is owner and CEO of J. Lauren Events in Columbus, Ohio.  You may remember her as one of our featured stylish planners from a couple of weeks ago.  Last Wednesday, Jen authored a wonderful post on Petite Body Types.  If you haven’t yet read about Jen, please check out her style profile now and get to know her a little better.  Jen will be a regular contributor on The Stylish Planner on the topic of Petite fashion, we are so excited to have her on board!

jen headshot-1From Jen:

I am so excited to start talking fashion!  Today we are going to discuss the challenges and rules of petite shopping regardless of size or shape.  First off, the thing many don’t get about shopping petite is that it doesn’t make sense.  For example, I wear a size 2 but I buy all my knee high boots in plus or ‘extended calf’ sizes.  And for the record, no I don’t have freakishly disproportionate calves.  It is just a tough shopping world for us little ladies.

Now we all know you need to have just about everything tailored but what else? Here are my top ten tips and tricks:

1. Start with a good foundation. They make petite bras, at least up to a C-cup. For those lucky buxom ladies, a bra with fully adjustable straps is a must. A standard bra will almost always be too long in the shoulder area. Don’t forget, you can have straps altered.

2. Buy petite sizes when you can, the construction isn’t just about the length.

3. Avoid anything labeled as ‘short’ it will be boxy, add weight and generally scream “I am a frumpy lady who wants to look 10 years older”.  And who wants that?

4. When you switch between petite to regular fits you need to go up/down a size. Yes they should be the same but they’re not so there you go.

5. When buying regular sizes three quarter length sleeves are your friends. Especially important when buying knits as they can be difficult to alter.

6. Knee high boots need to be scaled down. Try slouchy styles, which can be pushed or folded down to the right height, or mid-calf boots for a more proportional look.  When shopping online the listed boot circumference is usually for a size 8, it scales down ½-1 inch for every full size.  So small feet may need an extended calf boot.  However, the shaft length doesn’t usually change.  Strange, I know.

7. Don’t dress just to look taller.  Everyone wants to look longer and leaner.  I love 4 inch heels, but it’s not like I am going to fool anyone into thinking I am 5’10”.

8. Invest in colorful accessories. Retailers typically only sell the basics in petite sizes.  How much black can one girl own?  So show your personality in colorful jewels and bags.

9. Shop online and make good use of the customer service hotline or instant chat.  Ask about measurements of specific garments, then measure a similar item in your closet.  If it’s close you can probably make it work.

10. Give up.  There are just some things you probably won’t be able to wear.  So don’t feel bad and don’t stress over it.  My nemesis? Corsets and corset styled dresses.  They can’t be altered and are just too long.  So I am officially giving up.  Ahhh, I feel better already!

What are your petite shopping tricks? Do tell!

  • Sweetchic Events:

Love this! Being only 5’0″, shopping can be sooo difficult. Although I never knew about the petite vs. short tip! And yes, 3/4 sleeve sweaters are my best friend!

tuesday beauty: a stylish planner’s beauty kit February 16, 2010 posted in Beauty

Note from Jeannine:  I’m so excited to welcome to The Stylish Planner, NaShara Mitchell, Owner & Creative Director of Ready to Blush, Your Wellness & Beauty Concierge.  Based out of Indianapolis, Indiana, NaShara will be the Beauty & Wellness expert, contributing twice monthly on topics written with wedding and event planners in mind.  NaShara founded Ready to Blush in 2002 as a personal aesthetics company.  Services offered by Blush are a starting point to enhance, empower, and educate women, focusing on both inner and outer health, wellness, and beauty.  When NaShara and I first spoke, we realized Blush and The Stylish Planner have very similar philosophies, and working together is a natural fit for both of us.  Those of you who attended Eventology 2009 in Indianapolis may remember NaShara.  If not, you will have an opportunity to meet her at Eventology 2010, also in Indianapolis, in April.  Please enjoy this initial installment from NaShara!

You are ready to meet your client’s unexpected need with your stocked Planner’s Emergency Kit, complete with needle and thread, medicine, band aids and feminine care. Admittedly after lugging tablecloths and decorations or running interference between DJ, caterer or the momster, you’ll need to refresh before the event you’ve meticulously planned. Some items you can siphon from the larger kit, but others are simply yours; no sharing allowed. What’s in your personal beauty emergency kit?

A few of the basics:

1)  Makeup. You’ve found your favorite products, no matter how many or few. Be sure to have duplicates packed and easily accessible for a 5 minute face.

Trish McEvoy and Bobbi Brown Cosmetics both have customizable makeup pages and palettes to conveniently hold your favorites.  You can also opt for multi-functioning makeup products like tinted lip balms and moisturizers. Stila and Bobbi Brown have convertible crème pots suitable for both blush and lip color application. When you do not want to carry around full size products, make a trip to your favorite brand, department store or specialty store to seek out sample and trial sizes of your favorites. If none are available or are still larger than you want carry in your small personal stash, pick up a set of small hobby containers on your next run to the craft store and make your own clutch worthy miniature companions.

2)  When time is really short, refresh both you and your skin with a little Evian Brumisateur® Facial Spray or Jane Iredale’s POMMIST Facial Spray, gloss, and smile!

3)  Perfume or essential oil. A hint of your signature fragrance or other beloved scent does wonders for lifting your spirits and re-centering for the festivities.

4)  Nail polish remover wipes & polish pen for those manicure mishaps. When in a clear or neutral color, a polish pen like OPI’s Nic’s Sticks help to clean up chipped manicures, stop runs, coat irritating earring backs and one day wear wedding jewelry, as well as serve as a quick adhesive for ribbons, and paper goods.

5)  Wisps.  Forget the full on toothbrush & toothpaste, these little sweeties are convenient & effective.

6)  Cinnamon Candy. Cinnamon is known to boost brain activity.  Hard cinnamon candy pulls double duty as a breath mint and brain food to help fuel those event saving decisions.

So you have all these items, now where to keep them?  Store your must haves in a classic cosmetic case or head down the school supply aisle and nab a colorful & easy to clean pencil case.  There will be plenty of varieties in styles and colors to suit your day of needs and make you smile.  Storing items in an evening clutch makes the transition to post-event wind-down with your team as simple as adding your ID and credit card!
