tuesday beauty: bombshell hair looks from the emmy’s August 31, 2010 posted in Beauty

Confession:  I didn’t actually watch the Emmy’s on Sunday.  I merely skimmed blogs on Monday to see who the winners were and what everyone was wearing. Don’t hate me.

Even so, one look from the red carpet really jumped out at me and I just had to share.  Two of the characters from my favorite TV Show, Glee (and other actresses too) were wearing beautiful, voluminous bombshell hair.  Think Bridget Bardot meets 2010 fashion glamour.  I love it!  I really hope we see more of this look in the fall and winter.  I may even try it myself!  Now where is my teasing comb?

fabulous fashion friday: kate spade book clutch August 27, 2010 posted in Fashion

I am a long time fan of Kate Spade.  One of my brides gifted me the most lovely kelly green leather day planner several years ago, and I was immediately hooked.  I adore her use of bright colors and patterns, the somewhat retro style of her fashion pieces, the utter swoon-worthyness of the shoes…don’t get me started on the amazing shoes!

You know when you see an amazing blouse, dress, pair of shoes, etc. and you CAN’T stop thinking about it?!  Yep, that is me with this clutch.  Right now.  Since I first saw it last week – can’t get it out of my head!

Kate Spade Book of The Month Club Clutch – $325

I think I would go with the Great Expectations Clutch as a sort of statement on life – which one would you choose?

Have a great weekend!

Note from Jeannine:  I really adore Jessica, so I am excited for you all to meet this young lady today.  Without realizing that our paths had already crossed at the Southern Weddings Magazine launch party in Atlanta in January, 2009, I reached out to Jessica last year for some help with graphic design.  She had recently completed the branding for Julianne Smith of Garter Girl, and Julianne had tweeted about how great it was to work with Jessica.  Since working together initially, Jessica has worked on several design projects for me, and even presented to the attendees of The Style Plan workshop in Nashville.  I highly recommend her for any graphic design or stationery project you may be working on and please check out her blog, The Budget Savvy Bride – it’s really fantastic!  Please enjoy Jessica’s feature today!

Please describe your product or service.

Graphic design services ranging from logo design and branding to design and production of wedding stationery and invitations / A wedding blog that brings accessible, attainable, realistic inspiration to brides of all budgets.

How would you describe your personal style?

Eclectic. I’ve always been a fan of mixing dressier pieces with casual ones. I’m that girl who wears her pearls with her blue jeans, and I also love wearing menswear style clothing like vests. I try to be savvy and shop on the cheap and am always looking for good deals!

How does your personal style relate to your business branding?

Well, I’d like to think that people can’t tell how little I spend on my wardrobe because I pair better quality pieces with less expensive ones and I accessorize a lot. I love wearing big chunky statement necklaces to draw the attention to an otherwise everyday so-so outfit!

What would you like people to know about you that they will not discover through your website or blog?

I think I’m a pretty open book when it comes to my blog! What you see is what you get with me for the most part. I totally over-use exclamation points and smiley faces in my blog so it may come across that I am ridiculously hyper all the time so if anything I would say I’m a little more laid back and subdued in person!

What is your most treasured possession?

A pair of diamond earrings my grandparents gave me for college graduation. They were the first diamonds my grandpa ever gave to my grandmother so they have a really sentimental meaning to me.

What message would you like to convey to others in the industry?

That you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a beautiful wedding, or to look fabulous!

Please share your favorite beauty or style tip:

Moisturize! Even if you have oily skin like me moisturizer is so important and will keep you looking younger longer!

wellness wednesday: to cleanse or not to cleanse? August 25, 2010 posted in wellness wednesday

Beyonce reportedly lost 20 pounds in 10 days just prior to filming Dreamgirls by going on The Master Cleanse aka The Lemonade Diet.

Oprah did the Quantum Wellness Cleanse by developed by Kathy Freston.  You can read all about her experience on Oprah.com

Everywhere you look, there are Detox Diets.  Some with ingredients you purchase in the store and drink with water, some with instructions on certain foods and drinks you can buy yourself and make at home.

I can’t get past the idea of eating NO food (for 10 days!) with The Master Cleanse, and the Quantum Wellness Cleanse includes very few foods that I like and lasts for 21 days.  I suppose I’m not very disciplined anyway…I really, really, really love food!

Besides, isn’t it the job of my very capable liver to screen any toxins that I may accidentally consume?  I’m just not sure that the benefits would outweigh the discomfort of being on the diet.

If you are thinking about starting a detox or a cleansing diet, please do your research first and talk with a doctor.

Here’s a great link to an article on WebMD that may help:  http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/detox-diets-purging-myths

What do you think?  Have you considered going on a detox diet?

Have you already tried a detox or cleansing diet?  Tell me about it – I’d love to hear about your experience!

  • Michelle Loretta:

Seems like such a short-term fix. Do people really keep the weight off after these cleanses?

I agree with you… I think the body does its job. And, as long as you are balanced in what you eat, and how you exercise, then everything will work as it is supposed to.

fab fashion friday: charming charlie’s August 20, 2010 posted in Fashion

I recently discovered a new accessory store in my area that I really like, so I wanted to share it with The Stylish Planner readers.  Charming Charlie’s is an accessory boutique offering all kinds of jewelry, handbags, shoes, scarves, hair accessories and more.  The thing I enjoyed most about the layout of the store is that everything is organized by color.  This is a wonderful idea, because I am usually shopping for something specific when I am shopping for jewelry.  Also, the store is SO WELL ORGANIZED!  No more picking through junky racks of tangled necklaces – you could literally be in and out of the store with exactly what you needed in 30 minutes or less – AWESOME!

There is no online store as of yet, but there are locations in Alabama, Louisiana, Ohio, Arizona, Maryland, Tennessee, Florida, Mississippi, Texas, Georgia, Missouri, Virginia, Illinois, and North Carolina.  Lots of other stores are opening soon, so be sure to check out the location nearest you.

Have a great weekend everyone!

  • Abby:

I’ve been to the Charming Charlies in Maryland multiple times and loved it! The jewelry is dirt cheap and incredibly fun. And the store looks like candy land for adults when you walk in because it’s color coded!

style profile: lindsay mast, photog & duchess of hazard August 19, 2010 posted in style profiles

Note from Jeannine:  Although I heard of Lindsay long ago, I only recently met her at the Say Yes To The Dress Premiere Party here in Atlanta.  I am so glad I met her and can now call her a friend.  She is such a doll and her positive attitude is so refreshing in an industry where we can so easily get very cynical.  Trust me, you will want to read her profile and check out her work! Thanks for sharing your profile, Lindsay!

Number of years in business: 4

Website: www.sublime-photography.com

Blog: www.sublime-photography.net

Please describe your product or service. Sublime: Bright, Creative, Journalism-Driven Wedding Photography. SweetSnaps: Children’s Portrait Parties

How would you describe your personal style?

Original, cute and funky. I’ve always liked to stand out, but in a creative and attractive way–I was actually voted “Most Interestingly Dressed” in high school.

How does your personal style relate to your business branding?

It’s deeply connected for me. Clients realize they’re getting an original—someone with an all-around creative vision that’s different from everyone else. Within the wedding industry, I do a lot of networking and I figured out pretty early on that what I wore was a great way to stand out. Nothing opens a conversation better than “I love what you’re wearing.” I have a custom-made necklace that features the Sublime colors and flowers, similar to the logo. It’s subtle, but it works.

What would you like people to know about you that they will not discover through your website or blog?

I’m a Duchess of Hazard. I worked in Hazard, Kentucky as a television reporter and the Mayor made me A Duchess (get it? The Dukes of Hazard?). I have a certificate and a key to the city that doubles as a bottle opener. True story.

What is your most treasured possession?

Style-wise: it’s a toss up between my Elva Fields necklaces and my Frye boots. I plan on handing all of them down to my daughters one day.

Non-style wise: My wedding pictures, of course!

What message would you like to convey to others in the industry?

Practice the Golden Rule. Apologize when you screw up. Cultivate real relationships. Know that the one who needs the next favor might be you.

Please share your favorite beauty or style tip:

The easiest way to look great instantly? A big, genuine smile.

  • Sharon Alexander:

Glad you hooked up with the fabulously, stylish and, hilarious, Lindsay!!!

tuesday beauty: help for excessive sweating August 17, 2010 posted in Beauty

In my travels across the Southeast to present The Style Plan workshop, I’ve had a few wedding vendors talk about how uncomfortable they are on a wedding day due to sweating a lot.  In these conversations, solutions such as sewing cotton pads into armpits of shirts, using clinical strength deodorant, botox injections and other ideas were suggested.  These conversations definitely increased my awareness of the issue, and I discovered the medical term is actually hyperhidrosis.  Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes excessive sweating and wetness.

Having the topic fresh on my mind, I was really excited to come across an ad in a magazine for a product from DERMAdoctor.  DERMADoctor is  a great skin care site and resource.  They offer a great product called MED e TATE, which is an injection free medicated wipe that will help with sweating and wetness.

DERMAdoctor MED e TATE injection-free medicated hyperhidrosis control wipes

MED e TATE retails for about $48.00 for 30 wipes.

What is your solution for staying cool and dry while working in hot and humid climates?

serious business: visual integrity & cheetohs August 16, 2010 posted in Serious Business

Happy Monday everyone!  Today I wanted to touch on the topic of appearance a little more in depth than usual.  I’d like to go ahead and issue a disclaimer that today’s post may ruffle some feathers.  Please know that the message is not pointed to any one individual, but is intended as a reminder to all of us to look and act consistently when representing our brands.  I’m going through some branding changes myself right now based on recent reflections of this topic.

In today’s world, it is very likely that prior to someone meeting you in person, they will google you, look at your facebook page, have seen you referenced in a tweet, etc.  I confess to googling people in advance of meeting them and I’m sure that you do as well.  Many times, we meet people in person and suddenly realize that we have seen their Twitter name, saw an event that they were a vendor on, read a blog post they wrote, etc.  How many times have you met someone after first getting to know them “virtually” and you are surprised, even a little disappointed?

If you regularly follow the blog, it’s no secret how much I adore Seth Godin.  Probably my favorite posts from his blog are the short and succinct ones, such as this post from August 1, 2010 called, “I thought you’d be taller.”  In the post, Seth says,

“The chances that you and your brand will first be encountered digitally grow every day.  The only question is what sort of reputation and anticipation you create before they actually encounter you in real life. I think it’s a conscious choice.”

I couldn’t agree more.  Wedding professionals are notorious for using adjectives in our company names.  If you are using words such as, “unique, chic, exquisite, luxurious, elegant, stylish”, etc. in your company name, tagline, or company description, please exhibit that when we meet in person for the first time.  This is visual integrity – showing others that you are in person what you say that you are online and in your marketing materials.

I’ve said this a hundred times…wedding professionals are some of the most passionate people you will ever encounter.  We love our work.  We are in the business of making dreams come true.  We are extremely dedicated.  We deprive ourselves of sleep.  We skip meals altogether, or try to convince ourselves of the high nutritional value of cheetohs.  We throw on whatever we have that is black and clean for the client meeting.  We love our clients, but we are tired and frazzled and sometimes that shows, a little too much.

Visual integrity is not about looking flawless 100% of the time.  We all miss the mark every now and then.  It is however, about showing consistency in our image, our actions, our values, and in our work product.  (If your company name is Flawless Weddings & Events and I notice a typo on your website, you are instantly less credible to me.)  Make absolutely certain that you are what you say you are.

If you disappoint others with your first “in person” impression, trying to prove your ability and worth will become an uphill battle, or you could be taken out of the fight altogether.  Not convinced of the importance of your image and style?  Research has shown that 55% of first impressions are based on appearance, 38% on vocal expression and 7% is attributed to what we actually say.  With business start-up’s at a 14 year high, (according to the Kaufman Foundation) there are more self-employed people than ever competing for business.  It’s time to up our game – if our talent is the gift we give our clients, shouldn’t the packaging create excitement and anticipation for what is to come?

Are you confident in your visual integrity?  What is your opinion on image – does it really matter?

I love feeling as though I have found some secret treasure that few others know about, though this treasure may be more popular than I think.  Recently, I stumbled upon an online boutique called Ruche – “a modern boutique with a vintage touch.”  Think Anthropologie meets H&M.  Cute, feminine designs at affordable prices.  I think I’m in love!

Follow me through the meadows dress – $37.99
