For today’s post, I had intended to highlight a couple of hair care products that I adore from a company called Aveda (pronounced: a-vay-duh). These products are perfect for winter hair care, and with temperatures in Atlanta reaching a low of 15 degrees this week, I felt the timing was perfect for this post. So, as with each post on The Stylish Planner, I went to the company website to do a bit of background research. In particular, I was thinking it would be interesting to highlight the plant extracts used in the products and explain how each reacts to the hair. Instead, I found myself poring over the Aveda website, in awe of the global awareness the company exhibits in every aspect of the corporation and its products. Here are just a few highlights from my research today:
-Aveda is Sanskrit for “all knowledge”
-Aveda is the first beauty company manufacturing with 100% certified wind power.
-Aveda is one of the largest purchaser of organic ingredients in the personal care industry, with 90% of essential oils and 89% of their raw herbal ingredients being certified organic.
-Aveda has raised $11 million US dollars for environmental and social causes since its inception in 1978.
-All Aveda shampoo bottles contain 80 – 90% post consumer recycled content, keeping over 300,000 pounds of plastic out of landfills each year.
-In 1992, Aveda launched the first Concept Salon/Spa program, setting a new industry standard for building a sustainable salon business.
-In the early 1990’s, Aveda formed its first indigenous partnership with the Yawanawa nation in the Brazilian rainforest for Uruku pigment used in their certified organic lip colors.
-In 2002, Aveda received the Corporate Wildlife Stewardship Award from the US Fish & Wildlife Service.
-Aveda partners directly with suppliers around the world to help them to convert their farms to organic.
-Since 2005, Aveda has contributed nearly $1 million dollars to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
-Since 2004, Aveda has brought together the United Nations Global Business Leaders and indigenous partners to change the way the world does business.
-Aveda’s energy conservation efforts have saved 9 million pounds of CO2 emissions per year. That’s equivalent to the emissions from using 463,375 gallons of gasoline.
-Aveda believes that true beauty is in harmony with the web of life, enhancing the environment rather than damaging it.
My two favorite Aveda products are:
Information on Color Conserve Shampoo (from the Aveda website): Extend the vibrancy of color-treated hair. Our gentle plant-infused shampoo helps do what harsher cleansers can’t-resist fading, and protects color-treated hair from damaging effects of sun, water and environmental stresses. Retails for $15 for 8.5 oz. bottle.
Damage Remedy Intensive Restructuring Treatment
Information on Damage Remedy Intensive Restructuring Treatment (from the Aveda website): This intensive weekly treatment deeply penetrates to help repair, seal and smooth even the most damaged hair. Using the power of pure plant oils and quinoa protein, it restores health, silkiness and shine from the inside. Perfect for hair weakened by chemical processes, heat styling and environmental exposure. Retails for $26.00 for a 4.2 fl oz bottle. Note from Jeannine: This product SAVED my hair from severe damage after I had been platinum blonde for several months in 2008!
For Aveda, creating great products with an impressive environmental and social mission is all in a days work. Have you tried Aveda products? If so, we’d love to hear about your favorites!
