2010 – drastic or subtle changes to your style this year? January 04, 2010 posted in Uncategorized

I’m so glad we are in a new year!  2009 was a year of challenges for me, both personally and professionally.  It was really a difficult year, so I am not sad to see it go and I welcome the feeling of promise that 2010 brings!

Of course by now, your resolutions have been written and it’s likely you’ve put plans into action for weight loss, exercise, financial, business and personal goals, just to name a few popular resolutions.  I’d like to challenge you to think about how your personal style plays into those goals.  For instance, if you plan to cut back on unnecessary spending, you probably won’t be splurging on a Chanel handbag this year (and that is OK!).  If your plan is to lose 20 pounds or more, you will probably need to reassess your wardrobe when you meet your goal, or along the way to your goal.

Go ahead and picture yourself reaching your goals and consider what elements of your personal style will be affected.  Once achieved, (because we know you will reach your goals!) will your resolutions will bring dramatic or subtle changes to your personal style?

Personally this year, I only plan on subtle changes.   I’ve put a tremendous amount of time and effort into a complete makeover the last 3 years.  Although I’ve gained a bit of weight back after two years on a lifestyle diet program, I think I have reached a plateau for now and can maintain this weight comfortably.  (Of 40 pounds total lost, I have gained back only 8.)  As warm weather nears, I will practice portion control, cutback on caloric intake as well as exercise to drop some of those pounds for the more skin baring spring and summer fashions I enjoy.  Two years ago, I finally found a great skincare line that has really helped with breakouts and a lifetime of too much sun exposure.  I’ve almost completely overhauled my wardrobe, both in size and style.  I’ve transitioning from a closet full of dowdy, casual clothes, to a great assortment of well fitting, professional and casual wear that could pretty much take me anywhere.  Over the past year, I’ve been growing my hair out to be able to wear more versatile styles, and I am pleased with the color.  I think this year is more about fine tuning for me.  Regarding my personal style/appearance, I plan to make the following subtle changes in 2010:

  • Increase cardio exercise for heart health
  • Add weight training to exercise routine for increased muscle tone
  • Work on my poor posture by incorporating Pilates and Yoga
  • Purge excess items from my wardrobe (I have 32 turtlenecks in various colors – WHY?!)
  • Add a few classic pieces to my wardrobe (good pearls, one new handbag, nude platform pumps, black mary-jane heels, and basic trench coat to name a few)
  • Improve erratic sleep habits – shoot for a full 7 – 8 hours each night – no more, no less
  • Find and use a great, easy, affordable teeth whitening product on an ongoing basis

Does anyone have an recommendations for these goals?

This post inspired me! Your “makeover” sounds strategic, much like I would like to accomplish. I have a closetful of suits from my corporate days and am transitioning to a more exciting wardrobe that shows off my personal style to my clients. Thanks for sharing – and my favorite destination for classis peices is Banana Republic…happy shopping in 2010!
